End grain
Hard-maple end grain gives the knife a resilient working field while allowing the surface to be renewed many years from now.
A working surface with a signature of its own.
River No. 1 brings the Cossatot philosophy to one of the most familiar objects in the home. Crafted around the contrast of North American hard maple and black walnut, this substantial cutting board transforms an everyday working surface into an unmistakable expression of material, form, and purpose.
Two flowing walnut bands cross the pale maple surface, capturing a fragment of the Cossatot signature mark. The pattern is integrated into the board's wood construction rather than applied as decoration.
A recessed walnut base creates a subtle floating appearance, while integrated handholds make the substantial form easier to lift and position.
Designed for years of preparation, maintenance, and renewal, River No. 1 is a cutting board intended to become more familiar and beautiful through daily use.
Daily Cleaning
Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge after use. Clean the entire exposed cutting surface and rinse thoroughly. Dry immediately with a clean towel, then allow the board to air-dry completely with circulation around its surfaces.
Never place in the dishwasher or leave submerged in water.
Conditioning the Wood
Apply a food-grade mineral oil or a cutting-board conditioner containing food-safe mineral oil and beeswax whenever the wood begins to appear dry. Apply according to the conditioner instructions, allow it to absorb, and remove excess before using the board.
Avoid vegetable or cooking oils that may become rancid over time.
Preventing Movement & Damage
Avoid prolonged exposure to standing water, extreme heat, direct sunlight, and dramatic humidity changes. Never place hot cookware directly onto the board.
Clean and sanitize appropriately after preparing raw meat, poultry, or seafood to prevent cross-contamination.
Long-Term Maintenance
Fine cutting marks and natural changes in the wood are expected. With appropriate maintenance, the working surface can be professionally resurfaced when necessary. Use only food-contact-safe finishes when restoring the board.

River No. 1 begins with the familiar proportion of a serious butcher block, then gives it a form that belongs unmistakably to Cossatot.
Pale hard maple carries the daily cutting. Two black-walnut bands cross it from edge to edge, revealing only the central movement of an oversized SS mark.
These dimensions establish the first fabrication target. Final block geometry, adhesive, finish schedule, stability, and cleanability will be frozen only after a full-use prototype.

The design language
The mark is deliberately larger than the board. Only its central movement crosses the surface, and each walnut band begins and ends at an outside edge. The five sections can be cut to mating curves and joined edge to edge—never routed into enclosed pockets.
A walnut shadow base gives the board a deliberate stance and a natural place for the hands. The clipped front-right corner repeats the Cossatot Cut used across the founding objects.
Hard-maple end grain gives the knife a resilient working field while allowing the surface to be renewed many years from now.
Two continuous walnut bands carry a cropped fragment of the Cossatot SS mark from edge to edge—recognizable, structural, and free of enclosed inlay.
A recessed walnut base lifts the working mass into a quiet shadow line. Undercut grips make a substantial board easier to move.
No stain, resin, or metal crosses the cutting face. The board can be cleaned, re-oiled, resurfaced, and kept in daily service.
